The 38th Belgrade Film Festival will premiere the latest films by the most renowned filmmakers. FEST 2010 will be held in Belgrade from February 19 to February 28.
This year’s FEST will be opened by film Morphia, by famous Russian director Alexei Balabanov, who will be one of the festival’s guests. According to him, the film is not about drug addiction, but about a brilliant man, whose life has taken a downward course. Critics have described this film as strong and cruel. The main character is a doctor who, in the early 20th century, finds a job in a local hospital. Fighting for the lives of his patients, he jeopardizes his own life and tries to save himself with an injection of morphia, at the risk of becoming an addict.
This year’s slogan "fest encourages" is to invoke the first festival, held in 1971 under the title "brave new world". Conceived as an annual cross-section of the best films of the season – the International Film Festival - FEST – has grown into one of the most significant film festivals and become one of the main cultural events in Belgrade, which has marked the lives of many generations. It has been opened for all cinemas and authors of the world and also for films which are not subsequently released in cinemas.
So far, FEST has had some 4 million spectators and almost 3,800 world films, which were on that occasion premiered in Serbia, former Yugoslavia, or even in the region. Although it was founded 40 years ago, this edition of the festival is the 38th one, as it was not held twice during the 1990s, but that did not prevent it from continuing with its cultural and educational task of broadening the horizons of all the film lovers.
FEST 2010 will be accompanied by a series of cultural manifestations, concerts, exhibitions and multimedia performances. FEST also awaits the arrival of some 100 distinguished guests from the world (authors, actors, producers, critics, film and festival celebrities).
